The Summer Skinny

Health, Women's Fashion

Hello friends.

How was your weekend?

As someone who is married to a college student, I feel like I get to fully indulge in the upcoming week that is spring break.

Thank the sweet heavens.

This time last year I believe I wasted money and time by seeing Spring Break, the movie.

This year, I will be smarter, I will read more, and I will see something truly entertaining, like The Veronica Mars Movie.

Now, for the true point of my blog: The big ol’ “D” word.

Hate it. Never been good at it. There was this magical time in my life when I was vegan for about 2 years, but then I stopped, and haven’t been able to get a grip since.

I was like an addict coming back to the needle for the first time, except my needle is cheese, and my heroin steak.

“I’ll be better this week” I swore to myself time and time again, but the conviction came when I realized there had been a 20 pound increase since I said, “I Do”.

Now notably, most everyone looks back at their wedding photos with a desire for their thinner self, but I thought I was above it. I thought I was invincible with my vegan powers and determination to be the woman my Husby married. Surprisingly, most, if not all the weight was stacked on in my veganism. Being vegan did wonders for a very long time, and then just as suddenly as the weight came off it began to slowly stack back on.

Total Transparency, that’s what y’all are getting right now. The two photos above are the transformation from May 2012 to July 2013. (I am pictured far right on both) And although there was no photo’d bikini body from the earlier photo, you get the picture.

I do not use these photos to shame or to motivate myself because I love my body to much to think such harmful, gateway thoughts. What it did was provide a clear depiction of how much I wasn’t paying attention to the needs of my body.

During this time I was eating out every weekday at least once and every weekend for every meal. The excuses would be broad if I started to list them. “I’M in school”, “I’m too stressed to think about tomorrow’s lunch”, “I’m tired of only eating salads”, are a few that I used more frequently than not.

Despite the reality check I got in seeing the above photos, I was mortified at the thought of starting yet something else new in the midst of school and work, and Husby’s schedule. So I decided to wait until August, and then the Hubs said he would jump on board if I just waited until January.

So I waited, and let the decision be up to him when I would treat myself better and with more respect. How very silly, I soon realized. If I was going to get fit I was going to do it because I wanted longevity, energy, and a bit more self respect. I knew from previous experiences how much I was going to hate the first few weeks back at the gym. What I didn’t consider was how much more I would hate it with 20 extra pounds. I groaned and I moaned, but I started to reap the benefits. I’ve got a ways to go. It’s still really hard for me to give up that night wine, or cheese plate, but I know my body. I know what it needs and I know that what I have done in the past (the eat anything, drink anything you want lifestyle) was slowly poisoning my mind, body and soul.

A few weeks ago I came up with an brilliant plan. The 5 stickers to surprise method.

This is the calendar I put together for my sticker challenge. Feel free to print and share. I’ll get the sources of the quotes for anyone interested.

Alright, fine, my mom came up with a version of this plan to keep her kindergardener’s motivated throughout the year.

One week- five stickers. That’s my goal. If I work out and behave in my eating for 5 days in one week, then I get a surprise of my (semi) choosing. I gave a list to my Hubs of appropriate surprises and he monitors the calendar on the reg encouraging me and making grand promises of what will come. This past week I made it 4 stickers before I had a little fall on a high beam and ruined one of my tiny toes.

This week though, this is the week I get my 5 little pink stars. Toe or shine. Planet Fitness here I come.

Be encouraged friends. Take note of what your body needs. Not everyone needs to be that size two, but everyone needs to be rounded, balanced and conscious of what’s happening below the neck. (or around the neck area if you gain weight like me)

Some interesting reads on health, diet, and healthy mindsets:

ATX, BOS, Moving

I have a rather large announcement to make.

My moon, my man was accepted….

into Harvard Law School

and this is how excited I am about that. Really freaking excited.

So although we love Austin, and hope to end up here again someday, we’re packing our bags and making our way to a much colder climate.

I can’t wait.

Of course we need about a million dollars (and coats) between now and then, but still. IT’S HAPPENING!

Be thinking of us over the next few months as we prepare, and send some good vibes to the apartments we’re looking at because so far we haven’t found any that will take both our sweet pups. Which reminds me…

aren’t they just the greatest? I’ve decided if they’re able to make it up there with us I’ll start a hash tag on Instagram called #JuneofBoston and will be much more diligent about charting their cuteness throughout the city.

In summary: Yay Boston, Sad leaving Austin, Send good JuJu for the dogs.

Ze Lady Oscars

Women's Fashion

You thought I forgot, right?

Nope, I just went on a “yes” rampage and over committed myself this week.

As promised the Oscar nominees are as follows:

Lupita Nyong’o for stealing the show. From her humbling speech, to her darling charm, Lupita had me mesmerized the whole night.

Cate Blanchett for being a neutral/natural beauty. Cate is never at the front of the tabloids for her fashion. She has remained a nameless face for a few decades, but it’s not for lack of talent, or beauty. She possesses both in a profound way. FINALLY she was noticed at this awards show. Brava, Cate for not plastering on makeup, and also for picking the simplest of colors and making it ravishing.

Drew Barrymore (even though this is from the Golden Globes) for being the best preg on the red carpet these days. Every year I cringe to see what pregnant celebs will shove themselves into. They typically do one of two things: way over think it with bold fabrics and sharp lines, or they opt for the spandexy apparel. I admire how candid she is in her pregnancy cravings, it’s rare you find a celeb gushing about their cravings without the media bashing the next day.

Kate Hudson for the plunge. Kate has this trademark on lockdown since she wore that plunging back-line dress in How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days.            Which you should rent again right now.

Emma Watson for best coming of age. I don’t know that I’ve ever been this excited to watch someone come of age. Let’s face it, for most people in her position, they would’ve peaked in the teen series, and then been in rehab a year later. It has been so much fun to watch Emma gracefully transition into more mature roles and even funner is to watch her mature into her own style. She has the “it” factor in a way that doesn’t get overshadowed from roles past.

Sandra Bullock for clean lines. I admire both Lupida and Sandra for their ability to pick a dress with such beautifully shaped clean lines. Here sandra is seen in one of the most form flattering dresses of the night. Hugs in just the right places, and then A-lines out with just the right amount of train. The shape is A++, but then to have it in that color is just flawless. I love everything about this dress.

Here are some good runner up from that night that didn’t quite make my list. It may, or may not have anything to do with how much I like/dislike them as a person:

xoxo and happy Thursday.

Men's Fashion

Who watched the Oscars last night?

Although I did not live stream since I’ve yet to adopt the bunny ears needed to provide basic cable, I was watching everything I could via the internet.

As far as fashion goes, I was a little obsessed with what I saw.

In my opinion, the men below got some awards too:

Jared Leto for Best Combo. Men + Ombre= me gushing. The Black with the white, and the pop of his red bow tie had me doing double takes all night. Also looks as though he’s saying, “Right back atcha…” which is fun.

Bradley Cooper for keeping it classy. I felt like I didn’t know how a tux was supposed to look until I saw it on him. The suit was perfection although his boyish grin could have something to do with my bias.

Michael Strahan for Best Original Outfit. Who knew that we would see burgundy on the carpet? And who the hedoublehockeysticks knew it could look this good? Bravo Michael, I will be glued to you and Kelly this morning to see all the hungover movie starz.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt for stealing my heart. (Again) One word, nine letters: D-R-E-A-M-B-O-A-T.

Bill Murray for being so dang cute. Was I the only one who realized how old he is getting? After flipping though several more photos I became obsessed with finding the material from his suit, perhaps a silk taffeta?! Whatever it is, he looked dashing.

Brad Pitt for looking the most like an actor from the 50’s. I admire Pitt’s fashion. Always have, always will. Other things I admire about Mr. Pitt? His ability to wow women from ages birth to death. Always a fun day when you and your mother swoon over the same fella.

Kevin Spacey for best bold new look. Not only am I obsessed with Kevin Spacey’s spread of talent, I am floored with his confidence in pulling off any and every suit he wears, even if it’s the most untraditional of colors. This steely cobalt suit stole the red carpet last night. As for Kevin Spacey? He’s stolen countless hours of sleep and my desire to be the wife of a politician. (PS- Here’s a fun cocktail and drinking game for House of Cards)

More on women’s fashion coming soon, as for now I’m off to the gym!

The Asians know where it’s at..

ATX, Life, Men's Fashion, Women's Fashion

I believe I’ve mentioned my obsession with adopted babies- Asian babies in particular melt my heart.

I mean, really… Can’t we all just agree this google image baby is the cutest little squishy there ever was?! And I’m not even a baby person.

Besides the indisputably cute babies, there’s something else I’ve noticed about Asian culture– they’re as trendy as it gets when it comes to the realms of fashion. Here’s some street fashion I found floating around the interweb:

I love seeing the combination of something very adult and something that is reminiscent of childhood.

What do you think of Asian fashion?

Sisters make the best friends.

Yesterday was my sister’s 30th birthday.

One of the two that I have.

She has inspired me, taught me, and encouraged me.

I owe most of who I am to the two that came before me, and after reading a buzzfeed about why sisters make the best friends I decided to make my own Ode to the Burum Sisters list.

1) Sistory. The good, the bad, and the ugly tween years– They remember you. They may have mangled your hair in a round brush that resulted in a bad cut and the nickname “Mushroom Head” but boy did they shine beside you while you did joint tap, tumbling, and attempted to wear acid wash denim on denim. Now, 20 something years later, while having coffee with them I’ll flash through our sistory and marvel at all we’ve been through and accomplished. The feeling is incomparable to the love I have experienced with my husband. There is a camaraderie, there is experiences, there is sistory.

2) They got your back. There have been countless opportunities to trash the ones we occupy our time with, but our sisters? They’re off limits. I see the surprise in people’s faces when I deliberately choose to not go down that path with them, it is again, that camaraderie I have felt since birth to love and protect the ones that love and protect me. Furthermore, they can do no wrong in my eyes, and if I think something they’ve done is off, you will find me dead in a grave before you find me admitting any fault in them.

In summary: You trash my sister, I trash your face.

3) They’re the funnest people to have adventures with. When traveling it is easy to get your personal space trampled on and feel overwhelmed with the responsibility of making the other person enjoy the activities as much as you do. This is not the case with sisters. You can tell them to shut up and no matter what you’re in the middle of, they get it, and love you for it.

4) They laugh with you at inappropriate times. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve almost been kicked out of funerals and church services because of our inability to keep it together. No, we’re not insensitive, it’s the opposite in fact. We are so sensitive to the things that make each other laugh that we can spot a flinch of the eye, and in a second we’re rolled over uncontrollably for minutes at a time. Breathing is futile in times like those, and really, who needs to breath? If we die, we’ll just laugh together in heaven about how funny that was.

5) They’re (mostlyalways happy to see you. There are few scenarios in life (other than owning a dog) where you feel completely appreciated as a human being. Seeing your sister after time apart is one of the highest highs I’ve been on. Sure there’s the squealing and squeezing, but after a few giddy moments they jump right in and ask you the real questions with magical intuition like, “I know you said you we’re doing alright in regards to ________, but tell me what’s really happening”.

Which leads me to my final point….

6) Sisters make the best friends because they just get itSeveral times throughout the week, me and my sisters will send these obnoxious things called “Voxers” to one another. They’re basically glorified walkie talkie messages. During these conversations, we’re constantly being cut off by a terrifying 3 year old dinosaur/wolf, horrible drivers, or *whispers* husbands looking asking you the location (yet again) of their shoes. In these moments I get to hear the daily excitement of their lives, and although I love the content being spoken by these wonder women, I am more in awe of the background noise and how our relationship has transformed. It’s a beautiful time right now where my reality is in equal standing to the memories of the three little Burum girls we used to be.

Happy Happy birthday, my Meg. I love you all the more.

ATX, Hair, Life, Uncategorized

Hi there friends.

Remember when I mentioned my friend Sawyer? (insta: psh_itssawyer)

Well, she’s dating this hunk Justin, and occasionally they let me play with their hair, then they take beautiful photos of it.

Photo cred: Psh_itssawyer

Recently, they graced us with their presence in the ol’ ATX. They are, of course, some of our favorite humans. And excitingly, they’re both extremely gifted artists. (of the unstarving nature)
