Almost a Year Later. Checking In.

There’s something you guys should know about me.

I’m a starter. I love starting projects.

But I feel overwhelmed finishing them. When I first started this blog I had so much to share, so many ideas, so much potential for the tips, tricks, and hap-hazards of doing hair.

Then we moved twice- First to my parents to save money for a couple of months, then to Boston. Lucky for us there was almost two months before the chit hit the fan.

Winter. you S* of a B*.

The snow was glorious, the slip and slides- magical, but the thing that threw me into a pit of depression was the lack of light.

I am a summer child. Through and through. I roll with my windows down, if I even roll. Most of the time I prefer to walk, take the bus, or fantasize about being on a bike that I’ll never own. (My uncoordinated self would be dead in a day.)

My skin reacts magically too. As does most people’s in the sun. I swear, in the dripping heat I’d still get up, get dressed and be inspired. This is why Californians are always so happy… Well, that and other legal reasons.

Not here. There was a pivotal moment in transition when we moved here: 2 incomes to 1. While Studhubs is in Law School, he is unable to work. (Mandated for all law students cross-country) This we knew from the get-go. What we didn’t fully grasp is the amount of pressure we would both feel, mixed with the depression from apparent lack of light.

It was the most literal version of having “dark times.”

It started small. I just had a more difficult time getting out of bed. Then when I did I rationalized not changing out of my pajamas. The only person who would be seeing me was still 13 hours away from coming home, so why would ANYONE put on pants. (Law school is rough y’all)

I stopped eating. Then I ate too much. Then I became obsessive about what I was eating. Then I forgot to clean the house for three months. Seriously. Three months. It was a disaster.

I would punish myself for not being a good enough wife- then feel enraged that my husband wasn’t participating in any activities that would make us partners in this. He was tired. I was tired. It was rough.

Then, something magical happened two weeks ago. For one whole week it was nice outside. And by nice I mean it broke 60, and definitely didn’t go above 70, but there was sun. It changed everything.

I started getting up before my alarm. I made breakfast for us. I cleaned while he was gone. And [praise sweet Jesus] I took a shower.

At the last minute I got a tenant for the summer so that I could go with Hubs to Texas. *Where he’s summering at a couple of firms. I laid out our road trip itinerary and I started taking long walks with my dogs at 5:00… Because OMG it was starting to stay light out until 6:30 or 7. [instead of 3 or 4]

For the first time in ages- I feel happy, air headedly happy.

I bake. I clean. I put on pants. I walk my dogs. I almost eat normally. I’m returning to what I love: Hair, Designing, Sewing, Traveling, AND THIS BLOG.

There has been no shift in our circumstances, but the introduction of light into our lives is the most concrete evidence I’ve had that we are not cut out for the north. Kind of. At least if we do end up around these part we will require a “sunning room” with big, fake lamps to trick me into summa chil’ happiness.

Anyway, with the introduction of light into Boston/Cambridge, the style and shapes of humans are emerging. It is glorious. And something I will update on soon, as well as why Massachusetts is the worst state in the USA.

For now, I hope you are well, my friends. And that if you are east coasters, that you are soaking in the glory of light for as long at mother nature allows it.

Summer Swimmies

Life, Women's Fashion

I’ve been scouring the racks this summer to find the perfect swimmies. Between our Mexican Friendcation last month and our Texan Famcation this month I was in need of a swimsuit re-boot. Here are some I loved, and others I bought:

This adorbs j crew swimsuit cover up is embroidered, and I’m obsessed. I wore one similar from j crew in Mexico and I felt like a beach goddess.

As always I’m still obsessed with floral prints. This one being from Forever 21. or Forever 24 in my case.

What about you, lovlies? Have any summer items you’re drooling over?

Let’s hear it for all dem’ Baby Mamas!

I apologize for being so completely gone.

But hush already, I’m packing and getting ready to move 1,963.86 miles away AND I’m somehow going on vacation this week, so there.

But you’re not here for that. You’re here for fashion non-sense. So let’s get down to business.

We all have one. Chances are some of you are one, some of you hope to be one, or some of you are dating/married to one. If there is one thing that is pretty universal: the mom style.

“Oh, that’s a mom haircut” you might say, or, “Ew, look at those mom jeans!!”

Although I am not a mother, I do have one, and I also have two mom sisters, and since I was around them recently I’ll try and communicate what I see new moms and old moms alike needing.

1) A good pair of “go” shoes..

When it comes to on the go, these high profile moms have one thing in common: Bensimon. Bensimon is a european shoe company that is the equivalent of USA’s Converse. The soft canvas material is so extremely comfortable and the rubber soles make them fantastic for chasing after your littles. It is an added bonus that you can wear them with really anything. As seen above Liv Tyler sports them with a skirt!

2) Longer Shirts (Tunics)

Two things I hear mom’s complaining about: A) Longer shirts are too low cut causing them to have accidental boob flashes when their babies try and stabilized themselves B) Regular shirts aren’t long enough for all the times they bend over during the day to pick up their little ones, or at least pick up after their little ones.

3) Updated High-Waisted Jeans

High Waisted Good Fitting Jeans: Moms have been through something. Bodily assault. A tiny human is catapulted from the innards of a woman’s lower region. Sometimes this can cause what the public has so politely named “problem areas.” The main area being the belly and hip area. As previously noted, you will be bending down several million times per day. The updated high-waisted jeans will see that you can bend over with ease knowing your tummy will be tucked and your crack hidden. The ones above are from Madewell, I love Madewell because they will do in-house tailoring, which is a total must for adjusting to your new body. Mom’s rarely spend the money they need to on good fitting jeans because they don’t want to spend money on clothes when they’re planning on loosing the weight. Well, all I can say is when you feel good in the jeans, you want to make steps to feel good everywhere. You have to have clothes that you love for every stage of your transitioning body. And chances are your beloved favorite pair of pre-pregnancy jeans won’t fit like they used to.

4) Trendy Parachute Pants

Luckily, these pants have been EVERYWHERE this year. You can get them in the above fashion or with the synched ankles. These are the ultimate cool mom pants. European mom, if you will. They are high enough to cover problem area, but fitted enough to add some shape. Post pregnancy is hard. Like I said above, your body is in a constant state of change. A easy solution is to buy a bunch of these pants until you’re down to an ideal size and then splurge on nice new Madewell tailor jeans. Whatever you choose, you will be fabulous because you made a human, and no one can take that from you.

5) A purse that could double as a diaper bag

I love a good purse. I hate every diaper bag ever. (Dramatic)

A purse that’s a diaper bag? Brilliant. This waxed leather tote from Etsy blew my mind. Something that you can throw your wallet into as well as plastic keys, bottles, dinosaurs, random shoes, snacks and more? Yes, yes, and yes.

6) An easy make up routine

I love this beauty blog. The above photo is from her minute beauty routine. My recommendation? Find your brands, be loyal to the things you know work, if you don’t know what you like then go to Ulta or Sephora and have them guide you through what will work best for you. If the day has gotten away from you, no worries! Set an alarm for 10 minutes before your significant other gets home and throw on some lipstick and maybe some mascara. A good shade goes a long way, and it’s something they will appreciate.

Have I missed anything? What are your mommy must haves?

Hey Dolls,

Surely it hasn’t been two entire weeks, since I last mentioned the grand #fashionfursday. Or has it been three? Sweet goodness, I hope Time takes note of my pace sluggish behind her, and slows down for one millisecond.

I’ve been preparing my wardrobe, my mind, and my husby for the move, and also for vacation. Which surreally correlate.

We’ve been on a fairly strict diet for about 4 days now, and with my toe almost completely mended I am back in the gym. Huffin and puffin the stale sweaty air around me.

I have just under 10 weeks, to loose some weight, some furniture, and sadly the city I love so very much.

I have 2 more waxes. 50 more works. and 72 fading days until the end.

but ENOUGH of that already!

It’s #fashionfursday, and I want to see what you’re wearing.

Here are some of my favorite looks from around the interwebs-

As for me, I’m glued to my new jacket. My darling friend bought it for me. I’m convinced it’s because she thinks I might die in the Boston cold.

So, my darlings. What are you wearing?

East Bound and Wardrobe-less.

Moving, Women's Fashion

I have lived in Austin for 2 years, Texas for 17+ and the mid to southern states indefinitely.

Although I love the north, and also the Europe, I’ve only ever bought winter items that will last that season. This is obviously because my money was better spent on the hotter months. This method was solid, some might even say sound…. Until I realized that we’ll be moving to a winter wonderland in T-minus 6 months.

Now, I’m scouring to find the best, semi-well-made affordable clothes to get me through the next several winters. So as everyone else is releasing their summer wish list, I will be displaying:

What I need to get me through the next 4 dreadful winters in the north east….list.

These boots from Zappos: Affordably priced at $75 these red kicks are perfect. They’re waterproof, can be worn over or under jeans and they make a statement when the rest of your fashion statement is bundled and hid.

I’ll admit, I’m not that sporty of a person, but I am always envious of the girls that sport the Patagonia and Columbia jackets and coats. Luckily, my sweet father-in-law bought me a fuzzy Columbia fleece. I wear it incessantly from October through March. On my Winter Wonderlist I am adding a heavier version like the one above. Hopefully I can wear it if I go on a run, or at least run down the street for clam chowder.

As I assume I’ll be working in an office in BOS for that reason this jacket has it all. Buttoned or unbuttoned It is stylish while still having some weight to keep you warm. Not to mention it’s from my favorite website right now.

ombre sweater

I’m adoring this ombre sweater from F21. More-so, I love that this outfit could be transitioned easily from office to streets. Add a scarf and rain boots for the commute to work, or add a chunky necklace and some bright lips for after work drinks.

A few more sets of thermal PJ’s. I have some neon green ones, and I’m completely obsessed. In the winter months you have to pry me out of them.

Scarves on scarves on scarves.

winter office jacket

This jacket in camel color would be perfect for office or date, or really anywhere you’re headed. I’d probably have to order XXXL if it’s from an overseas vender.

thick tightscute tight

Cute and (or) wooly tights.

And finally, some odds and ends of other miscellaneous items I love/need.

I’m positive I’ll be adding to this list more in the future, I’ll especially need to brainstorm more office attire. But this is the best I could do in one sitting. What do you think? What are your winter must-haves?

Busy as a bee.

ATX, Life

Hello lovelies,

I assume you all though I was dead. On the contrary, for the first time this year I was outside for longer than 20 mins. I played more rounds of games than one, and I celebrated a man, my man, and a new niece.

Luckily, I took pictures of most everything that happened. What I didn’t capture was due to the fear that my phone could fall out of the kayak and into the lake.

Here’s some shots from the past week. An obvious favorite being from my sweet, adorable new niece, Bridget.

Friends from the land of Oklahoma!

Celebrations being documented.

Old fashioned cupcakes, seriously had whiskey in the frosting and the batter. Amazing, gluten-free and I modified to be vegan!

The most beautiful animals in the world- stealing the show on St. Patties Day.

So in love.

Brother meeting sister for the first time.

We’re entirely obsessed with our new Aeropress. Best cup of coffee I’ve had in my life- sans exagération. We honestly have saved so much money making our delicious americanos at home.

Finally made it to Gordoughs, with zero disappointment.

And somehow despite not loosing any weight, and eating that ginormous donut sandwich I appear to be getting a bit more Slim Jim.

And because this post was completely personal, here’s some links to some fashionable minded people.

Adriana from Leopard Martini always shows reasonable fashion for the every day classic styled person.

I love browsing this fellas blog. It frequently prompts me to email to my husby a list what he should be sporting these days.

Love seeing this girls blog for Austin fashion, and much like me, she has a lot of life on her blog too. Love.

I follow @thuglifeforevs on insta and she is a photography genius, her website is equally mesmerizing.

As I go east, my sweet friend Megan heads west. Read her blog here, and look for her musings on my blog in the future as we share little snippets on how we plan to prepare our wardrobes for costal living.

The Return of the Ever-Loved #fashionfursday

ATX, Women's Fashion

About two years ago I was fortunate enough to nanny for the two most adorable two-year old twin girls.

Every day their little mouskateer voices would squeal in sheer delight over the littlest things.

“Ohhhh miss Macy look at that barrette in your hair! Isn’t that the most beautiful thing you ever saw?!”

Despite being the adult I felt like a princess every time their eyes came my way.

I began dressing for them, and educating myself at the same time.

Thus birthed the hashtag #fashionfursday

Because their perfect little mouths couldn’t all the way pronounce the “th” yet.

For today’s #fashionfursday I’ve gathered some instas of Austin street style, and intent to get my butt downtown to capture some live feed of it.

My friends, what are you wearing today?

@thexoxomm and hashtag #fashionfursday to let me know.

Moms, fashionistas, worker bees. I wanna see them all.
